An initiative by Carla van Hengel: mother, trainer and seeking a Biblical balance in the age of AI.

Carla van Hengel

Hi! How lovely that you are here!

AI fascinates me: the speed at which it develops, the opportunities it offers, but also the questions it raises.

Through my work, after years of experience in education, I became involved in training about AI for the business market. At the same time I am a mother of four children, and I notice how AI is entering our family: through apps and school, among other things. Our children are growing up with this technology.

As Christian parents we are finding our way in this. With AI, the world has become just a notch more complex than it already was. 😊

There are opportunities I do not want to miss, but also risks I want to stay alert to. And above all: it calls for reflection; that reflection currently lags (in my view) too far behind our children's use of it.

That is why we organised an evening about AI in our church. The interest was great, and it did not stop at one evening. Other interested people followed.

Hence this page. I hope to take you along in what AI can mean for your family, in which I seek a Biblical balance. And I want to help keep up with the developments and interpret them from a Christian perspective, because that is a question that always comes back: "AI is developing so fast! How do I keep up?"

PS I am sure there are institutions and people better able to inform and advise about the use of AI, but as long as they are not visible enough, I am happy to step in. 😊

PPS Feel free to leave a comment on Instagram or send a message via the contact form if you have a question; I am happy to think along with you.

Thomas Boom (15) writes a contribution here and on Instagram (Slim.of.wijs) every month, and also wrote an article for DRS. That's not as the representative of young people, but I do it as someone who actively thinks and builds along with the future of technology.

I have been active in the tech world for years. I program, work on open-source projects such as YAM Launcher and BijbelQuiz, and also contribute to other freely available software. I'm also involved in IP-Car, a project that gives children with a disability a full place in the classroom from home.

Every day I see how technology shapes our world. That makes me think about the opportunities, risks and responsibilities that come with it.

From this spot I share my view on AI, ethics and technology, from the perspective of a young person who not only thinks about the future, but also helps build it.

PS Do you know a young person who would like to think along about what is needed to equip other young people in this day and age? Or are you that person yourself? Feel free to send a message; we are considering starting a think tank. 😊
