Is AI formation fundamentally different for Christian parents?
Is AI formation for Christian parents and teachers fundamentally different from that of non-Christian educators?
I think it is. At least, partly. 😊
The balance between opportunities and concerns is relevant for almost everyone. You can read everywhere about risks like dependency, deskilling, bias, environmental impact and AI slop.
What also overlaps is the mirror AI holds up to us in parenting. Why are you for (or against) AI? What does that say about the values you consider important? Whoever values efficiency highly will probably be more enthusiastic. Whoever values slowing down will of course be more cautious.
The difference, I think, lies in the reference point. For many educators that lies in common sense and scientific consensus. For Christian parents, the Bible is the lens through which common sense and science (too) are weighed. From there follows:
- The worldview: humanity as the crown jewel of creation, ensouled, image-bearer of God, and not transhumanist, where human and machine end up on the same level.
- The focus: a secular approach to AI in parenting focuses mainly on skill and safety: how do you become successful and stay safe? A Christian approach is aimed at sanctification of life, raising children in God's way.
- The spiritual weight: where many educators are wary of influencing children and young people on sensitive themes such as identity, such AI advice is for Christian parents not only pedagogically sensitive, but also spiritually charged. It's then not only about development, but about worldview formation and faith development.
- Stewardship: questions around environmental impact and brain development gain a deeper dimension from the calling to handle carefully what has been entrusted to us.
I think we can strengthen each other, but that the Biblical perspective fundamentally belongs in the AI education of our children and young people.
