AI for homework?
"My daughter uses ChatGPT for her project. Should I forbid that?"
It depends. Dumping pure assignments into ChatGPT and copying the answer is not honest towards the teacher, and your child learns nothing from it. Honesty and moderation are Christian values that apply here too.
But: do not throw out the baby with the bathwater. AI can in fact help enormously with learning.
Examples:
- Via taalkampioen.vercel.app you can, for example, easily make flashcards and play games with classmates using the words you have to learn
- My son learns his catechism with an AI app, a catechism memorizer
- Practising English by speaking out loud with ChatGPT's voice mode: making mistakes without shame
- Asking for extra explanation with difficult maths or physics
- Having practice tests generated to test yourself
- Support with dyslexia or DLD, reading texts aloud, summarising, simplifying
The difference is that AI takes over your work when copying; when learning, your child uses AI as a tool, just like a dictionary or calculator.
So the question is not: AI for homework, yes or no? But: how does my child learn to work with it in a way that is honest and genuinely helps?
